The IPC at Oxford Gardens

At Oxford Gardens we strive to develop a rich and varied curriculum to enable our learners to achieve their aspirations. By using IPC we are able to plan and deliver interesting and engaging lessons to help promote this deeper learning opportunities as well as fostering a love of learning. Through IPC, we are also able to help develop our five core skills:

  • Confident

Our children are confident to discuss their own and others’ opinions, they can present their findings to different audiences and they can ask questions about their learning.

  • Responsible

Our children are responsible for their own learning through personal responses, homework projects and through self-assessment.

  • Independent

Our children are independent when completing work in classrooms, researching different ideas and reflecting on their learning in exit points.

  • Successful

Our children are always successful after each unit because they have found out new and exciting facts, used different skills (often using ICT) and presented some fantastic work.

  • Innovative

Our children have the opportunity to be innovative especially when creating their own hypotheses to experiments in science, developing their own projects and reflecting on their school trips.

What is IPC? ‘The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) is a comprehensive, thematic, creative curriculum for 3- 12 year olds, with a clear process of learning and with specific learning goals for every subject, for international mindedness and for personal learning’.

Within the IPC we cover learning goals for History, Geography, D&T and Science. There are also learning goals for children’s personal development, for the development of children’s international mindedness and international learning. The IPC provides learning goals for every subject of the primary curriculum, and are defined for each age phase: Milepost 1 (KS1), Milepost 2 (LKS2) and Milepost 3 (UKS2). Our selected units for each phase give pupils an exciting variety of themes, whilst ensuring full coverage in each subject by the end of that phase.

How does each unit work?

  • Pupils will be made aware of their new IPC Unit prior to the start of each half term. This will detail the skills they will learn in an ‘entry point’ day to help ‘hook’ the children’s interest. This is when the children will have chance to discuss what they already know in a ‘knowledge harvest’ and discuss their theme further.
  • Throughout the unit each year group will explain their theme further through research and experiments; they will record their ideas in a variety of different ways. The children will have opportunity to use ICT to promote their learning throughout.
  • Each unit concludes in an exciting ‘exit point’ activity, this gives the children chance to reflect on their learning.

The school provides highly effective support for the pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Pupils learn not only what it is to be British but also to respect the cultures and beliefs of others.

One of the things we have been working of since our last Ofsted is producing extended, quality writing in our IPC work. The children have done this through a variety of different ways including: newspaper reports, recounts from trips, radio interviews and diary entries. Have a look at some of our amazing work!
